In the final “I Am” statement in John’s gospel, Jesus states, “I am the vine.” While many of us may be familiar with this statement (and this passage) there are several intense directives from Jesus here that should jolt us to full attention. Using the gardening metaphor, Jesus utters one of the most direct and authentic statements in his ministry: “apart from me you can do nothing.” Do we – or will we – believe that?
