The Flood of God’s Grace

Passage: 2 Cor. 5:16-21

Many people pray for rain, but no one asks God to send floods. The National Weather Service reports that flooding can cause more damage in the U.S. than any other natural disaster—to the tune of 8 billion dollars per year, on average. A flood can wash out roads and bridges and destroy homes, completely altering existing landscapes. For a flood known worldwide for its unparalleled destruction of course, we look no further than the flood of Noah’s day—forever a sign of God’s divine judgment poured out on sinful mankind. But as significant as the Noahic Flood was, its consequences pale in comparison to the flood of mercy and grace which flowed crimson at Calvary. Paul describes what we might call the “eternal aftermath” of Jesus’ crucifixion in his letter to the believers at Corinth: total reconciliation with God; total regeneration for anyone who is in Christ; and a totally new way in which believers will see the world. The Genesis floodwaters receded after 150 days, but the flood of God’s grace has never let up will flow on forevermore! As we continue on in our series Poured Out, we are glad to welcome the Dock Touring Choir this Sunday, who will lead our worship and share some of their choir pieces.
