One hot summer day, Robert Lowry (pastor, hymn-writer, and Philadelphia-native) posed a question that would become the opening words to one of his most well-known songs. “Shall we gather at the river?”—he asked. What river? The river of life! Revelation 22 says that it “flows from the throne of God”. The answer to that question comes in the refrain with a resounding, “Yes, we’ll gather at the river.” This illustrates one of the dynamics we see prevalent in our sermon texts throughout Lent: that God pours Himself out for sinful mankind, and that man should respond in turn by pouring himself out—as the purchased offering (Rev. 14:4), the living sacrifice (Rm. 12:1). This Sunday we will consider how true belief and true repentance lead to true forgiveness and genuine unity.
